Jonah Hill called a papparazzo a gay slur over the weekend — and now, he’s apologizing for it.

“In that moment, I said a disgusting word that does not at all reflect how I feel about any group of people,” Hill told Howard Stern in a radio interview.

Hill’s offense: Saying “suck my d—, you f—–!” to a paparazzo. (The moment was of course caught on tape by TMZ.) “I’m not at all defending my choice of words, but I am happy to be the poster boy for thinking about what you say and how those words, even if you don’t intend them and how they mean, they are rooted in hate and that’s bullsh–. And I shouldn’t have said that,” Hill told Stern.

The 22 Jump Street actor actively and publicly supports gay rights, and recently took a stand against Russia’s anti-gay stance during the Olympics. “It would break my heart to think that anyone would think, especially with all the work that I’ve done, that I would be against anyone for their sexuality,” he continued.

But while Hill obviously regrets his choice of words, he doesn’t seem to regret telling off the persistent paparazzo in the first place: “I should have said nothing, or just ‘f— you.'” Still not the nicest alternative — but hey, it’s better than hate speech.
