The Internet pretty much melted down yesterday with the news that a Sin City 2 poster featuring Eva Green in a very sheer gown has been deemed too explicit for public consumption by the MPAA. But who, exactly, does the French actress play in the movie?

When EW recently spoke with Green, she insisted that her character, Ava Lord is much more than a just a pretty, uh, face. “She’s a femme fatale,” she said. “She’s an archetype of the femme fatale, like in all the films that we know. Like Double Indemnity. She’s like an Ava Gardner or a Rita Hayworth. She uses men to gain money and power. She was really fun to play because she can be fragile and very vulnerable with a man — and with another man, she’s a real bitch.”

Sin City 2 is actually the second Green-starring film of 2014 to be based on the work of comic book writer-artist Frank Miller, following her appearance as Artemisia in 300: Rise of an Empire. “Total coincidence,” says the actress of her return to Miller-land. “It’s quite weird, but it was a pure accident.”

Of course, something else the two films have in common is the amount of green screen work involved in their production. “I wish they could change the color sometimes,” says Green. “Green makes you sick.”
