You know a heroine means business when her name is Kick Lannigan. ”Kick can pick a lock, scale the outside of a house, and shoot a semiautomatic,” says Chelsea Cain, a best-selling author who’s launching a new series with One Kick. Her protagonist also boasts a Jaycee Dugard-like backstory: Kidnapped at age 6 and rescued five years later, Kick grows up to become a crusader searching for missing children. ”Kick is a rescuer, not an avenger,” says Cain. Does she have any flaws? ”She doesn’t know how to make small talk.”
