Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley is recovering after a month-long hospital stay for alcoholism.

“I finally realized I can’t drink anymore. If I have one drink the docs say I will die,” the Canadian rocker wrote in a note posted on his website on Friday.

Whibley — who was married to Avril Lavigne for three years — apologized to fans for being “M.I.A.” in a post titled “Rock Bottom.” He detailed the horrific effects years of hard-drinking had on his health.

“It finally caught up to me,” Whibley wrote. “I was drinking hard every day. Until one night. I was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around midnight and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden I didn’t feel so good. I then collapsed to the ground unconscious. My fiancé got me rushed to the hospital where they put me into the intensive care unit.”

The 34-year-old explained that he was completed sedated for the first week of his stay. The post includes pictures of him in his hospital bed. “I was stuck with needles and IVs all over. When I finally woke up the next day I had no idea where I was. My mum and stepdad were standing over me. I was so freaked out. My liver and kidneys collapsed on me.”

Whibley said the incident scared him straight, and that he has given up booze. “I’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly,” he wrote. “I didn’t, and look where that got me. (I never thought I would ever say that! haha).”

Besides getting clean, Whibley said the experience has inspired him to get back to work. “I have my passion and inspiration back for writing music,” he wrote. “I already have a few song ideas for new songs. Soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again.”

Sum 41’s last album was Screaming Bloody Murder, released in 2011.
