'Funny or Die' spoofs Sofia Coppola's 'The Little Mermaid'
Sofia Coppola’s The Little Mermaid may be nowhere near release yet — but Funny or Die’s spoof of the upcoming movie could be a pretty accurate predictor of what it’ll be like. (Or at least, what we hope it’ll be like.)
Coppola, director of Lost and Translation and The Bling Ring, is working on a live-action adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. Many have joked that the film will feature the hipster version of Disney’s Ariel; Funny or Die made this joke a reality in a video that stars AnnaSophia Robb as a cutting-edge Ariel and American Horror Story’s Evan Peters as a cigarette-smoking Eric.
Check out the parody below, and watch until the end to hear a Little Mermaid-themed version of The Strokes’ “I’ll Try Anything Once” (and for a reference to that one whisper in Lost and Translation’s final scene):
This sendup really is uncanny — especially compared to a trailer for Coppola’s actual work.
