Witches are working for WGN America. The cable network has renewed its first scripted series Salem, just three episodes into its 13-episode first season.

“At WGN America, we are committed to delivering compelling, brand-defining programming rich with fascinating characters and Salem has done just that,” said Matt Cherniss, President and General Manager, WGN America and Tribune Studios, in a statement.

The freshman drama had a strong debut, delivering 1.5 million viewers for its first airing, a tally that grew to 2.3 million with repeat airings, and has remained steady.

The 13-episode second season will begin production later this year to air in 2015.

“I could not be more thrilled or more proud of our cast, writers and crew who made this show come alive,” said co-creator and writer Brannon Braga. “The fans have been fantastic and we plan to continue keeping them on the edge of their seats.”

Salem stars Janet Montgomery, Shane West, Seth Gabel, Xander Berkeley, Ashley Madekwe, Tamzin Merchant, Elise Eberle and Iddo Goldberg and airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on WGN America.
