'Game of Thrones' hits biggest rating yet after controversy
If last week’s controversial episode upset Game of Thrones viewers, it sure didn’t drive them away. HBO’s fantasy hit once again broke its ratings record Sunday night. The “Oathkeeper” episode delivered an all-time high of 6.9 million viewers.
That edges out the show’s previous best set earlier this season. Across three plays, Thrones totaled 8.4 million viewers. Here’s EW’s recap for “Oathkeeper.”
At 10 p.m., the latest episode of HBO’s new comedy Silicon Valley had 1.6 million viewers (1.8 million for the night). Veep had 922,000 viewers (1.2 million for the night).
HBO also premiered its new talk show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which delivered 1.1 million viewers at 11 p.m. and 1.4 million when you add its first encore. That’s pretty strong for an HBO late-night program, and the show received very positive reviews. Oliver was previously a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. By comparison, last week The Daily Show averaged 1.5 million viewers and The Colbert Report had 1.2 million viewers.
