It’s only a few hours before the season finale of Scandal, and ahead of this much-anticipated episode, creator Shonda Rhimes and Sundance Channel’s Writers’ Room host Jim Rash hosted a Twitter chat, during which she answered questions about what goes into creating the addictive drama.

Rash asked if Rhimes and the writers ever found themselves backed up against a wall by a previous story decision. And from her responses, it sounds like the creative team does not look before they leap. Among storylines that had no real direction were Quinn’s identity at the end of season 1, what to do after Fitz was shot, and where to take Sally after she killed her husband.

Rhimes also shared some pitches she originally hated that ended up being brilliant plot points — in particular, killing James.

Like James’ shocking murder, Scandal is full of many twists, but Rhimes contends she doesn’t have to try too hard to keep the cast’s lips sealed.

And on a lighter, more romantic note, a fan asked whose idea it was to have Fitz build Olivia a house in Vermont.

Below are some other highlights from the chat:

Check back at EW.com for a recap of the season finale after the show’s East Coast airing at 10 p.m. on ABC. The season 2 premiere of The Writers’ Room featuring Scandal airs this Friday at 9 p.m. ET on Sundance Channel.
