• Gerard Butler is attached to star in the sci-fi adventure Geostorm. Longtime writer-producer Dean Devlin (Independence Day) is writing and directing the movie which posits a world where satellites can control the climate. When they begin to malfunction, Butler’s “charming satellite designer” has to work quickly to save the world from the imminent storm. [THR]

• Javier Bardem will join Charlize Theron and Adèle Exarchopoulos in the Sean Penn-directed movie The Last Face. Theron and Bardem will play doctors doing humanitarian work in a conflict-ridden region of Africa. Exarchopoulos will play a journalist. [Deadline]

• Jane Fonda and Bruce Greenwood have joined the cast of Fathers and Daughters, a generational drama starring Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried. Crowe plays a depressed novelist trying to raise his 5-year-old daughter, and Seyfried plays the daughter, grown up and struggling with her own problems 25 years later. Fonda is set to play Crowe’s literary agent and Greenwood will play his brother-in-law who is trying to adopt the young girl. Greenwood’s wife will be played by Diane Kruger. Quvenzhané Wallis, Aaron Paul and Octavia Spencer also star. Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness) is directing the film, which is currently underway in Pittsburgh. [Deadline]
