Investigation Discovery casts '80s heartthrobs to play bad boys
If you grew up adoring Christopher Knight (The Brady Bunch) and Kevin Sorbo (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys), you probably won’t love them here.
EW has learned exclusively that a dream team of ’80s heartthrobs like Jack Wagner and Rob Estes (Melrose Place), as well as Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club) and Antonio Sabato Jr. (General Hospital) — as well as the aforementioned Peter Brady and Hercules — will take part in a new miniseries called Heartbreakers for Investigation Discovery.
Slated to premiere later this year, the three-parter will script true stories about how the perfect catch can sometime turn out to be the perfect criminal. The miniseries will also feature ’80s galpals like Tracey Gold (Growing Pains) , Nicole Eggert (Baywatch) and Jamie Luner (pictured above with Estes and Wagner, from Melrose Place).
This is a little different from our standard Investigation Discovery series, which are always rooted in true crime,” Executive Producer Pamela Deutsch tells EW. “These are all true stories. But instead of having the narrator with documentary interviews, we have the doc interviews with fully scripted scenes. So it really has the feel of a primetime soap opera.”
Though the network has relied on celebrity hosts and narrators in the past, this is the first time actors have actually played roles on an ID series. “We always looked at our shows and wondered what they would be like if they actually had really big talent acting out the scenes,” said Deutsch. “This was a lot of fun for us.”
Investigation Discovery is expected to discuss Heartthrobs and other upcoming shows at their upfront presentation for advertisers Thursday.
