James Rebhorn made a career of playing characters whose names you might not remember, but whose appearance you definitely do. The veteran actor, who died on March 21 at the age of 65 after a long battle with melanoma, enjoyed a career spanning 40 years that included memorable roles in dozens of movies (such as Independence Day, Scent of a Woman, and My Cousin Vinny) and TV (Third Watch, Seinfeld, and more recently USA’s White Collar). At the time of his death, Rebhorn was playing the weary father of Claire Danes’ Carrie Mathison on Showtime’s Homeland. Filming has not yet begun on the show’s fourth season, but Rebhorn’s passing leaves the series in a state of narrative jeopardy as the season 3 finale (spoiler) found Mr. Mathison offering to adopt Carrie’s baby. It remains unclear how Homeland will send off his character, but the actor’s distinguished résumé ensures that when it comes to the screen, Rebhorn will forever live on.
