Palo Alto may be Gia Coppola’s first credit as a director and writer, but filmmaking is in her blood. She spent much of her upbringing on the set of her aunt Sofia Coppola’s films, and her grandfather is, of course, director Francis Ford Coppola.

The 27-year-old first came to the film while hanging out with her friend, James Franco, who’d just written his debut collection of short stories, Palo Alto, and wanted to see it adapted for screen. “He said, ‘If you like it, let’s do it,'” Coppola recalls. She was inspired by the stories: “It really captured teenagers in an accurate way, which I don’t think is easy to do, and I hadn’t seen it in a while.”

Coppola enlisted Emma Roberts to play April, a quiet, virginal Northern California teenager, and Franco himself to play Mr. B., who enters into an affair with April. Jack Kilmer, son of Val, makes his acting debut as Teddy, the local bad-boy. You can check out the brand new poster for Palo Alto, which will be released May 9, exclusively above.
