I’m a sucker for a good dance movie and/or a good movie about dance, and yes, they’re two different things. When I was growing up, Save the Last Dance was my most-watched movie, and in terms of how many times I’ve seen it, it’s probably still in my top five. But my second favorite dance movie is one I came across in my teen years: Stomp the Yard. (And before Gladiators start asking, that is Scandal‘s Harrison, and as much as I like Columbus Short in a good suit, he will always be DJ to me.)

I fell in love with this movie for a number of reasons:

1) There are hot men, and in one particular scene — which might be my favorite part of the movie — they’re running shirtless. And there are a lot of them.

2) The dancing is pretty spectacular. Whether you’re watching the first scene of the film with Chris Brown or the final dance battle, it’s just about impossible not to dance along.

3) I love a good cheesy love story in the middle of my dance battles, particularly one that involves the rich vs. poor dilemma (and a tragic past!).

4) The bass in my car was in love with this soundtrack back in 2007, and now, my iPod still is.

And although it’s been seven years since I first saw the film in theaters, every now and then, I pop it back in my DVD player. It’s become a thing that I do every few months, which leads me to my confession — that’s right, watching it is not my confession. The other day, out of the blue, I started singing, “We rep’n thetas, thetas, thetas. We rep’n thetas, thetas thetas. We rep’n ooo ooo ooo BOOM!” And that’s when I realized that I probably quote Stomp the Yard more than any other movie.

For example, when a group of people is being mean, I’ve often said, “Gamma who? One word: bitches!” But more than anything else, I can’t tell you the number of times I have done Theta’s “explosive, splosive, splosive,” fade out. And finally, inevitably, before it’s time to do just about anything, I imitate Ne-Yo’s “Showtime!” rather perfectly, if I do say so myself.

Before you ask, I’m not sure why I quote this movie more than any other. I do love it, and I have seen it a lot in my life, but I haven’t seen it any more than I’ve seen How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or The Departed. Then again, I do say “Benny boo boo boo boo boo” a lot, and if I quoted The Departed too often, I’d probably offend a large amount of people. Or perhaps my life is just a dance movie in the making. Hey, a girl can dream.

So next time you hear me say any of the above, you will know where it came from. You’re more than welcome to call me out on it, but just be aware: If you haven’t seen Stomp the Yard, I will make you sit down and watch it with me. To sum it up, it’s rather “explosive, splosive, splosive.”

What about you PopWatchers? Do you have an unexpected film that you quote the most? Or better yet, do you also love Stomp the Yard?!
