The 28th Survivor season finale and reunion show is heading back to its roots — Wednesday night. Entertainment Weekly has learned that the Survivor: Cagayan three-hour extravaganza will air on CBS, May 21 from 8-11pm. Richard Hatch won his million dollar check on a Wednesday night back in the summer of 2000, then the show (and the finale/reunion combo) moved to Thursdays. But in 2002 during season 4, CBS moved the Survivor: Marquesas finale to Sunday night. It went back to Thursday for Survivor: Thailand later in 2002, but then returned to Sunday after that for Survivor: The Amazon is 2003. And that is where the final episode and reunion have stayed ever since…until now.

The switch likely has something to do with the show starting its season later than usual on Feb. 26 to avoid airing against the Olympics. Other CBS programs altered their schedules as well, meaning the network was likely running out of Sundays to air their finales before the end of May sweeps. However, if the move proves successful (and ratings have been a pleasant surprise for this installment so far), then it is possible CBS could make it a permanent switch, much like when they moved regular episodes of the show from Thursday back to Wednesday in the fall of 2010 with Survivor: Nicaragua. Regardless, this will mark the first time Survivor had aired its finale on a Wednesday night since 51.7 million people tuned into the season 1 ender back in 2000.

It seems wherever and whenever CBS airs Survivor, people will keep watching. The show is in the midst of a renaissance of sorts, currently in the middle of its fourth strong season in a row, and has already been renewed for two more cycles to air in fall 2014 and spring 2015.
