About Alex

Director Jesse Zwick’s new drama About Alex tells the story of seven college friends who reunite for a weekend after one of them suffers an emotional breakdown.

Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Max Greenfield (New Girl), Jason Ritter (Parenthood), and more star in the upcoming film that finds the seven friends realizing that despite keeping up through technology since graduating from college, they really don’t know each other as well as they used to.

EW caught up with Jesse Zwick over the phone to talk about his upcoming independently produced film. Read on to find out what he had to say about the film and to see an exclusive photo from About Alex featuring Aubrey Plaza and Jason Ritter below:

Though Zwick says the film is not autobiographical by any means, it was partially inspired by a reunion he and his old college buddies tried to make happen a few years ago.

“In a way, telling this story was sort of wish fulfillment for the reunion my friends and I couldn’t make  happen,” Zwick said. “I started thinking: What if we’d all been able to push pause on our lives and  get back together? What would have happened? Would we still be the same people we used to be?”

From there, the story that would become About Alex took root.

Despite having a few castmembers known for their comedic roles on television, Zwick says the best way to describe About Alex would be to call it “a drama but with comedic elements.”

“I think in a way, it’s much truer to life this way, especially in the wake of tragedy,” says the director. “Often when something serious happens, we try to cut the seriousness with humor, and that’s similar to what happens in About Alex.”

Finally, the director touched on the two exclusive photos from the film featured in this post saying that he loves the still of Aubrey Plaza and Jason Ritter (who play Sarah and Alex in the film) because it conveys a level of intimacy he tried to achieve throughout the course of filming in order to make the audience believe these seven people truly had been friends in real life.

As for the photo of Max Greenfield and Plaza (featured above), of their relationship, Zwick simply says, “It’s complicated,” and viewers will see why when they sit down to watch the film, which also stars Maggie Grace (Lost), Jane Levy (Suburgatory), and Max Minghella (The Internship).

Independently produced, About Alex is in post-production and will soon be looking for distribution.
