The new animated series Star Wars Rebels is the latest spin-off to come out of George Lucas’ epic space opera, and when the show premieres on the Disney Channel later this year, fans will see the rise of the Rebellion through the eyes of a 14-year-old con artist named Ezra.

Executive producer Dave Filoni and voice actor Taylor Gray share some insight into Star Wars‘ new reluctant hero in a behind-the-scenes video that premiered Friday. Find out more about Ezra in the new clip below:

Though he eventually winds up fighting for the greater good, Ezra will start off the series as a reluctant hero who’s had a bit of a rough start in life. Taylor Gray, who lends his voice to Ezra on the show, describes his character as “very street smart,” something that comes from the fact that he’s had to grow up on his own in the age of the Empire.

“He’s a pickpocket, he’s a little thief. But he’s doing it all because he needs to survive,” says Gray.

Filoni stresses that Ezra is not a bad kid, Rather, his behavior has been influenced by the world around him and the fact that the world he lives in is under Imperial control.

So how does a teen who’s looking out for number one wind up becoming a Rebel and helping restore freedom to the galaxy? Showrunners for the new cartoon are hoping you’ll tune in to find out, but creative executive Rayne Roberts teases in the footage below that Ezra will have a change of heart once he’s introduced to the crew of the Ghost.

Star Wars Rebels will premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special on the Disney Channel before moving to its permanent home on Disney XD.
