John Singleton will rewrite, direct, and produce a Tupac Shakur biopic, EW has confirmed.

The long-in-the-works picture will follow Shakur’s rise to fame as well as his murder following a boxing match in 1996 in Las Vegas, according to Variety, which first reported the news. Years ago, Singleton — who directed Shakur in Poetic Justice — was linked to the project, but the deal fell through.

“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” Singleton said in a statement to Variety. “His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation.”

No casting information on Shakur has been announced.
