Madonna has an issued an apology for using the n-word in an Instagram photo of her son. On Friday, the singer posted a photo of 13-year-old Rocco Ritchie boxing with the caption “No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out! #disn—a.“ When there was an immediate outcry from fans, she replaced the caption with “Ok let me start this again. #get off of my d-ck haters!”

Today she posted a more contrite statement on Instagram and Facebook: “I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N word on Instagram. It was not meant as a racial slur.. I am not a racist. There’s no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention.. It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it’s a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me.” This is the second controversy in the new year surrounding a Instagram photo of Rocco. Earlier this month, she posted a picture of Rocco holding a bottle of gin, which was taken from a family vacation in Switzerland and accompanied by the words: “The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014.” After that photo caused a stir, she wrote: “No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor! Don’t start the year off with judgement!”
