Night 2 of Fox’s American Idol fell even further from last year’s premiere-week benchmark, while NBC’s The Michael J. Fox Show dipped into uncharted depths of must-not-see-TV fail-dom. Idol had 13.2 million viewers and a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49, down 32 from its Thursday debut last year. Compare that to Wednesday’s premiere which was down 23 percent from last year.

NBC’s comedy lineup took a hit against Idol, but the scariest number on the grid by far was The Michael J. Fox Show. The freshman comedy series had only 2 million viewers and 0.6 among adults 18-49, down 40 percent from last week. That’s the lowest rating for an original episode of in-season NBC Thursday night comedy ever.

NBC famously committed to a full season of this project before having even seen a pilot. While canceling a show typically feels cruel, at this point it perhaps might be merciful. Downright heroic is Parenthood, which is delivering a poor number at 10 p.m., yet by literally doubling it’s MJFS lead-in, the series is doing some real heavy lifting. The rest of NBC: Community, Parks and Sean were all down about 20 percent.

CBS was in repeats, which has to be a scary prospect for both NBC and Fox. When that Big Bang Theory-fueled lineup returns to originals, competition is only going to get tougher. ABC essentially decided not to compete with The Taste and Shark Tank. Likewise The CW aired the Critics Choice Movie Awards.
