NBC orders 'Anchorman'-style astronaut sitcom from Will Ferrell
Anchorman as astronaut — that’s the pitch behind a new project by Will Ferrell that just received a pilot order.
The potential NBC series is titled Mission Control and it’s set in 1962. The official description: “A workplace ensemble in the tone of Anchorman examines what happens when a strong woman butts heads with a macho astronaut in the race to land on the moon.”
Executive producers include Ferrell and his production partner Adam McKay, who also directed both Anchorman films. David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as pilot showrunner.
The project is so high concept, it sounds like a movie pitch (actually, it once apparently was). Also, it’s rare for comedies to be set so far in the past. Usually if a sitcom is going retro, it’s set within the last few decades, such as The Goldbergs, That ’70s Show and Wonder Years.
NBC also gave a pilot order to a weight-loss comedy titled Ellen More or Less, about an average size woman begins reinventing herself in life and love after losing 100 lbs. This is from writer-producer J.J. Philbin (New Girl) and executive producer Jason Katims (Parenthood).
