Just when you think you know how Jon Stewart is going to react on any given issue, The Daily Show host surprises you.

During Thursday’s night’s telecast, Stewart weighed in on the Duck Dynasty franchise and the current impasse between A&E and the outspoken Robertson family.

“I think what the guy said was ignorant,” Stewart said of Phil Robertson’s anti-gay and racially charged comments published in GQ magazine. “But I also have an inclination to support a world where saying ignorant s–t on television doesn’t get you kicked off that medium.” Stewart’s audience applauded. “But I guess I stand with the free speech absolutists at Fox News who don’t believe you should pressure people to have to adhere to culture norms of speech — mostly.”

Stewart then segued into Fox News’ hosts tackling its annual “war on Christmas” issues.

Admittedly, Stewart didn’t seem too enthusiastic about taking this stance, but no matter: He’s apparently Team Phil, or more accurately his stance is: Team Let’s Not Fire Somebody For Expressing a Dumb Opinion.
