Estelle Parsons and Stephen Spinella are heading to Broadway in the new play The Velocity of Autumn, opening April 21, 2014, at the Booth Theatre.

After plans for a Broadway run last spring were shuttered in favor of a try-out at Washington, D.C.’s Arena Stage, the 90-minute dark comedy will feature direction by Molly Smith. Previews for playwright Eric Coble’s Broadway debut begin on April 1.

Oscar winner Parsons will star as Alexandra, a 79-year-old artist who locks herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with a bevvy of explosives after quarreling with her family over her remaining years. Her estranged son Chris (two-time Tony winner Spinella) climbs through her window and is the family’s only hope at leveling with her.

The play will boast scenic design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Linda Cho, lighting design by Rui Rita, sound design by Darron L. West, and wig design by Paul Huntley. The Velocity of Autumn previously took its world-premiere bow at Boise Contemporary Theatre in Idaho in April 2011, followed by a run in Cleveland in April 2012.
