Rugged treks through a snowy tundra, death-defying leaps from a helicopter piloted by a drunk schlub, a daring attempt to get Kristen Wiig’s attention on eHarmony: This epic trailer for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has it all.
By now, you’re probably familiar with Ben Stiller’s adaptation of James Thurber’s classic tale of daydreaming and ennui, memorably adapted once before into a 1947 classic starring Danny Kaye. But if not, here’s the deal: Stiller directed and stars as Mitty, an utterly average office drone with an overactive fantasy life. After discovering a mysteriously missing photo negative, Mitty embarks on a wild real-life adventure that’s every bit as exciting as the trips he’s been taking in his imagination.
Wiig costars as Mitty’s coworker and dream girl Cheryl; the film also includes turns by Shirley MacLaine as Mitty’s mother, Adam Scott as his brotastic jerk of a boss, Kathryn Hahn as his sister, Patton Oswalt as an eHarmony customer representative — when this guy thinks you’re pathetic, you know things have taken a turn for the worse — and Sean Penn as the arctic explorer who inspires Mitty to stop dreaming and start living. All have a presence in this six-minute extended promo, which just might inspire you to turn off your computer and hop on a plane to Afghanistan.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty opens Christmas Day.
