Lorde’s “Royals” is indisputably one of the biggest and best songs of the year — but if it has a shortcoming, it’s that its video is a pretty low-fi affair.
Such is not the case for the clip for Lorde’s latest single “Team,” which just arrived this afternoon. It’s not bombastic by any stretch, but it does place Lorde and her band of teenage friends in the same beautiful ruins she sings about in the track’s chorus.
She took to Facebook to explain her vision behind “Team.”:
“This video was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was Queen,” she writes. “I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn’t need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger. Enjoy.”
What have we learned? That Lorde has way better dreams than you do. Check out what her subconscious delivered to her below:
Lorde’s Pure Heroine is out now, and she’s currently on the west coast performing at a handful of radio-sponsored concerts before she returns Down Under for the holidays (and a triumphant homecoming victory lap through Australia and New Zealand in January).
