The Wolverine (2013, PG-13)
Hugh Jackman, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima
The Bad News Bears Go to Japan of comic-book movies, this noirish X-Men side story strips Jackman’s lovably gruff character down to his metal bones. (Also available on iTunes) B-

The Smurfs 2 (2013, PG)
Neil Patrick Harris, Brendan Gleeson, Katy Perry
As close to the magic and whimsy of the original Smurfs as a horse with a toilet-paper tube on its head is to a unicorn, this manufactured sequel will make you blue. (Also available on iTunes) C

Drinking Buddies (2013, R)
Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, Olivia Wilde
Joe Swanberg’s agreeably rambling romantic comedy about friends and more-than-just-friends is great hang time. (Also available on iTunes) B+

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013, PG-13)
Jamie Campbell Bower, Lily Collins, Aidan Turner
More YA? Why, eh? At least this sorcery-and-romance adaptation of the best-selling series is fizzy and fast on its feet. (Also available on iTunes) B-

Serpico (1973, R)
Al Pacino, John Randolph, Tony Roberts
Pacino cuts back on NYPD corruption but not his sweet-looking beard in the gritty 1970s classic. (Also available on iTunes) A-

Coming Soon
Fast & Furious 6 (2013, PG-13)
Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez
The latest auto actioner is fuel-injected and as polished as its chrome (and chrome domes). B+ 12/10

Despicable Me 2 (2013, PG)
Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig
Carell’s second go-round as Gru, the relatable supervillain, is missing the zing of the original. C 12/10
