If you happen to run into Lorde on the streets of New York today, go ahead and give her a cupcake; today is her 17th birthday.

Actually, she can probably afford her own festive pastries — her smash song “Royals” is once again the number one song in the country. That’s six weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100, which gives “Royals” the second-longest run in that spot this year. (She still has a long way to go to match the 12 weeks that “Blurred Lines” scored, though she did pass Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us,” both of which netted five weeks.)

To celebrate her birthday, Lorde took to Tumblr, and got thoughtful:

“I think back to my last birthday; it fell in the middle of exam revision but a bunch of my friends came over anyway to eat cake and ruffle my hair and talk about Pokemon,” she wrote. “This time last year I was making a Soundcloud, and a Twitter, and a Tumblr, all in the name Lorde. I had no clue what was going to happen with the music. I hoped it’d be alright.”

How will she celebrate today:  “I’m going to wrap up warm and walk around the city listening to Stevie Nicks and Broken Social Scene, feeling all seventeen, hugging myself against the cold,” she wrote. “If you see me, and I’m whispering to myself all crazy, don’t worry. It’s just a happy mantra of thanks for the way things are.”

If you have a minute, it’s worth reading the whole post here.
