Adventureland co-stars Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart have signed on to play a couple in the action comedy American Ultra. Eisenberg’s stoner character Mike becomes the unwitting target of a government operation, disrupting his small-town life with his girlfriend, Phoebe (Stewart). Project X helmer Nima Nourizadeh is set to direct from a script by Max Landis (Chronicle). • Kristen Stewart will also take on a small role in Tim Blake Nelson’s Anesthesia, an indie about a group of New Yorkers affected by a common philosophy professor. [Deadline]

Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny) will star alongside George Lopez (Lopez Tonight) in Pantelion Films’ La Vida Robot. Based on a Wired magazine story by Joshua Davis, the film will follow a group of undocumented Mexican-American teenagers who take on MIT in a national robotics competition. Tomei will play the part of the teacher who guides the students for Soul Surfer director Sean McNamara.

• Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right) and Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) are co-starring in writer-director Michel HazanaviciusThe Search, a drama based on Fred Zinnemann’s 1948 Oscar-winner about an NGO worker who befriends a young boy in Chechnya. Hazanavicius wrote and directed Best Picture-winner The Artist and is married to Bejo. [Deadline]

• Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) is teaming up with John Cusack again (the pair starred together in 1408) for Cell, which Stephen King co-wrote with Adam Alleca. Tom (Jackson), a former soldier, and Clay (Cusack) must escape Boston when “a mysterious cell phone-transmitted pulse spreads like a virus through the human population.” [The Wrap]

• Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen) is in talks to star as Kane in the video adaptation Kane & Lynch for director F. Gary Gray. Vin Diesel has an offer to play Lynch, a schizophrenic killer. In 2007, Bruce Willis and Jamie Foxx were attached to star in the adaptation. [THR]
