• Jake Gyllenhaal, who has been widely praised for his recent performance in Prisoners, is in talks to team up with Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) for the boxing pic Southpaw. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter was hired to write the script, which tells the story of a disgraced title-winning fighter who tries to rehabilitate his image for the sake of his daughter. Eminem was attached to the role at one point. [The Wrap]

• Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can) will play a jazz musician and father to Lenny Kravitz’s (The Hunger Games) character in Little Rootie Tootie for writer-director Daniel Algrant, who made 2012’s Greetings from Tim Buckley. [Deadline]

• Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids), Bobby Cannavale (Blue Jasmine), and Nick Kroll (The Kroll Show) are attached to star in the comedy Brother’s Keeper. Ross Katz, who produced Lost in Translation, is directing the movie about an entrepreneur who flames out and goes to live with his sister, brother-in-law, and nephew. [THR]

• Ellen Barkin (The New Normal) will re-team with her This Boys Life and The Fan co-star Robert De Niro for Hands of Stone, a biopic about boxer Roberto Duran (played by Edgar Ramirez). Venezuela-native Jonathan Jakubowicz is directing the project. [Variety]
