Jay Leno may enjoy mocking President Obama’s liberal policies, but apparently he does believe in recycling.

The NBC host told a joke about Obama on Tuesday’s Tonight Show that was pretty much exactly the same as a quip he made about the president last May.

“Remember the old days when President Obama’s worst embarrassment was Joe Biden?” Leno said during last night’s monologue.

Which basically matches this from Leno’s monologue earlier this year: “Remember the old days when President Obama’s biggest embarrassment was Joe Biden?”

The re-use was first spotted by Mediaite. Presumably coincidentally, Leno’s Tonight Show repeats last week actually beat new episodes of CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman in the ratings all five nights among total viewers and adults 18-49. So perhaps Leno just realized he doesn’t even need to tell new jokes to stay on top on this point. Leno is off to his biggest start four weeks into a new TV season in three years in 18-49 and biggest in two years in total viewers, with his lead-out (and next year’s Tonight Show replacement) Jimmy Fallon at a three-year high in the demo.

Here’s both monologues, below, the first with the joke at about 1:25 and the second at :20 (for those of you who either want to fact-check the above or really want to see Leno tell this joke twice). The line got a much bigger reaction the first time, so maybe his fans do pay attention to this stuff. And Leno’s “by the time you sign up for ObamaCare you’re eligible for Medicare” quip was actually pretty good.
