The future just got a bit more interesting: John Larroquette is joining the cast of Fox’s Almost Human.

The actor best known for his long-running 1980s-90s role on comedy Night Court is coming on board the sci-fi action-drama in a dramatic recurring role. He’ll play “Nigel,” a “genius roboticist who is sympathetic, highly intelligent and a bit broken.”

Almost Human is set in 2048 and stars Karl Urban and Michale Ealy as buddy cops, one of which is an android. The Emmy-winning Larroquette was most recently in NBC’s Deception, and was also a regular on Boston Legal.

As previously announced, Fox moved the premiere date for the J.J. Abrams/J.H. Wyman-produced series to Sunday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. to take advantage of a football double-header lead-in. Then on Monday, Nov. 18, Almost Human will have its regular time slot debut, with an episode concerning sexbots no less (or more properly: “IRCs — Intimate Robot Companions”). Here’s a seven-minute clip from the premiere (which is being billed inaccurately around the web as “the first seven minutes” — it’s not, it’s just early in the episode):
