Fifth Harmony, Cody Simpson celebrate Nick Radio launch
Nickelodeon celebrated the launch of its online music streaming platform Nick Radio Thursday night with stars, screaming fans, and — what else? — slime.
Hosted by the station’s DJs and Big Time Rush actress Ciara Bravo, the event, which was also streamed online, drew fans (and their parents) to New York’s iHeartRadio Theater for performances from girl band Fifth Harmony and singer Cody Simpson. Both artists have been mainstays on the station’s playlist since it began streaming Sept. 30.
For Simpson, the event meant an opportunity to showcase his acoustic set, crooning five songs including his 2010 debut single “iYiYi,” as well as tracks from his album Surfer’s Paradise.
“[Nick Radio] is a really great outlet for me to be at and share my music with my fans,” said the 16-year-old singer. “I’ve been in a really different mindset…. I’ll be turning 17 at the top of the year, and I’m really looking to make something that’s gonna surprise people, that’s a little more timeless. It’s the album I’ve been waiting to create. I want to branch off into my own sound and show people my voice.”
Fans also went wild for Fifth Harmony, who opened the event with choreographed performances to songs from their just-released first album Better Together, including the single “Miss Movin’ On.” The girls (and X Factor alums) even agreed to close the show by being “slimed” with Nickelodeon’s signature green goo. They ended up with slime dripping from their clothes and hair (despite donning shower caps), but the quintet cheerfully stayed on stage to greet fans and mug for their cameras. “It’s a really cool way for being able to reach out to the kids,” band member Lauren Jauregui said.
And the party was certainly for the kids — an orange carpet in front of the stage was reserved just for children, while characters in costumes like Spongebob Squarepants and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles danced to the performances in the back. The intimate setting and the stars, said Bravo, highlighted Nickelodeon’s aim to mash its brand with today’s Top 40 hits.
“They’re incorporating the goofy, fun, classic Nickelodeon deal with music that kids are gonna like, so I think it’s gonna be a nice mix-up of both,” Bravo said. “I know that fans are gonna love it, and I’m gonna love it.”
