Throwback Thursday: Aliens were less complicated in the 1990s
Nowadays, there are so many supernatural shows and movies, which means that aliens come in a variety of shapes and sizes. But back in the 1990s, and especially before then, the special effects weren’t as fancy, and audiences were more easily pleased, which resulted in fairly simple aliens. Most were small in stature and very unrealistic-looking. They drove actual UFOs, and the majority of them were green (as they should’ve been, according to Toy Story).
Take my favorite scene from the 1997 groundbreaking film Spice World. The girls meet a group of aliens in the woods when they stop for a potty break — pull over the bus, Meatloaf! — where they are introduced to some small plastic-like creatures that look faintly human, are huge fans of the group, and are wearing green coats. So their skin isn’t green, but it’s close enough. And they’ve got a UFO, so they’re clearly legit.
