Christina Aguilera, ”We Remain”
From the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack comes a song meant to empower all the children brave enough to murder their peers in combat. Just kidding! But only kind of: The song is engineered for generic teen-movie spectacle. Still, it’s Xtina and it’s a power ballad; the odds are ever in her melisma-ing favor. B+Ray Rahman

Avril Lavigne Feat. Chad Kroeger, ”Let Me Go”
There’s nothing sly about this monster breakup ballad, except for the fact that Avril drafted her new husband, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, to belt it with her. Out of the pileup of strings, piano, and lumbering drums emerges the rarely acknowledged nitty-gritty: Married life ain’t always easy. If they’re straining for anything here, it’s for the truth.
