MTV might be a little behind the singing show curve, but at least they’re honest about it in their new series, Copycat. Next Entertainment, in association with Warner Horizon Television, will produce a new half-hour show where wannabe singers battle it out on stage for a cash prize. The catch? The competitors are trying to sound like their favorite recording artists to earn the title of Ultimate Copycat.

The series, from The Bachelor producer, Mike Fleiss, is set to air in the afternoon, perhaps in hopes of connecting with the same audience that delivered solid ratings in those glorious TRL years. No word on the premiere date yet, so tell that karaoke DJ to power up the Beyoncé, because you’ve got some practicing to do.

What do you think — better to suspect that someone is secretly trying to sound like Adele, or have them actually fess up to it and battle Mariah and Whitney sound-alikes while they’re at it?
