And we’re off! Neil Patrick Harris kicked off the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards with a host-filled opening number. What started with an over-complicated binge-watching bit (that made at least one viewer very dizzy), turned into a bit of a rough start on stage for the usually musical host.

Shying away from said musical talent, Harris wasn’t exactly on his game when he first came out on stage, trying too hard to make a joke about the way “kids” watch television nowadays. But after the first Paula Deen joke of the night, Harris was joined on stage by previous hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan O’Brien, who picked up the tempo (a little) with gender jokes, tap dancing, and those always funny 2002-was-so-long-ago jokes.

Thankfully, Kevin Spacey was there to save the day, putting a stop to the somewhat-funny ongoings on stage to reminisce House of Cards-style about how “it’s all going according to plan.” Commenting on the “blabbering buffoons” on stage, Spacey promised that the “cherry on the proverbial sundae” was about to be served … enter Amy Poehler and Tina Fey!

There to bring the opening number home, Poehler and Fey (complete with popcorn and 3D glasses) yelled at Harris to take off his pants and “twerk it.” It is, after all, an award show. As Poehler put it, twerking might be degrading, but the audience would be mighty “degrateful” if Harris stole Miley Cyrus’ move.

All in all, the opening finished strong. Its beginning? Well, we’re willing to overlook it. But only because Kevin Spacey said “buffoon.” Watch it below:
