Blackbird (2019 Movie)

• Robert Pattinson (Twilight) and Dane DeHaan (The Place Beyond the Pines) are set to star in Life, which tells the story of Magnum photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson) and his burgeoning friendship with James Dean (DeHaan) as they embark on a road trip on assignment for Life magazine in 1955. Music video and feature director Anton Corbijn (The American, Control) is helming the project from a screenplay by Luke Davies, who penned 2006’s Candy. The shoot is expected to begin this February in Canada. [ScreenDaily]

• Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) has signed on to star in David Mamet‘s thriller Blackbird, about what happens after her character’s grandfather, who worked in visual effects for movies and the government, dies. The secrets he harbored prove to be dangerous. [TheWrap]

• Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Fast & Furious 6) is in talks to star in a feature adaptation of the 1980s ABC series The Fall Guy about a movie stuntman who is a bounty hunter on the side. McG (Charlie’s Angels) is also in early talks to direct. [Variety]

• Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty) is in talks to star in an adaptation of Gregory David Roberts‘ novel Shantaram, about a heroin addict who escapes prison, becomes a doctor in India, and helps to strategize against Russian troops in Afghanistan. Johnny Depp and director Peter Weir were attached to the project at one point, which Warner Bros. acquired the rights to in 2004. No director is set. [Deadline]

Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn has tapped little-known British actress Sophie Cookson to star opposite Colin Firth and Taron Egerton in The Secret Service. Samuel L. Jackson also stars as the bad guy. [Variety]

• Krysten Ritter (Veronica Mars) has joined the cast of The Color Wheel director Alex Ross Perry‘s Listen Up Phillip. She’ll star alongside Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss. [Deadline]

• Odeye Rush, who appeared in The Odd Life of Timothy Green, has been cast as Fiona (Jonas’ best friend) in The Giver. [Deadline]

• Bill Nighy (Love Actually), Dominic West (The Wire), and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) will star in the 1984-set dramedy Pride for director Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage). It’s about a group of gay and lesbian activists who raise money to support a the mine workers union while they strike. [Variety]

• Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will star alongside Eliza Coupe (Happy Endings), Demetri Martin (In a World…), and Kyle Bornheimer (She’s Out of My League) in the indie The Last Time You Had Fun about a group of men and women who randomly decide to eschew all responsibilities and relationships for a night out in a limo. Mo Perkins (A Quiet Little Marriage) is directing. [Deadline]

Snow White and the Huntsman‘s Jamie Blackley is set to star in the adaptation of the young adult book If I Stay with Chloe Moretz. [Deadline]

Blackbird' is, in the end, a devastating, end-of-life melodrama but feels a little manipulative and thinly told in the end.
