Casting Net: Olivia Munn in talks to join thriller 'Mortdecai', more

• Newsroom favorite Olivia Munn is in talks to join Mortdecai, based on the rakish art-dealing anti-hero Charlie Mortdecai created by author Kyril Bonfiglioni. There’s no word on what her part might be, but she would be joining an all-star cast that currently includes Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ewan McGregor. Writer-director David Koepp (Premium Rush) is helming the project. In addition to her role as Sloan Sabbith on HBO’s The Newsroom, Munn is currently filming the feature Beware the Night with Eric Bana and Joel McHale. [Deadline]
• Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch has reportedly exited the Guillermo del Toro gothic horror movie Crimson Peak, which is scheduled to begin shooting in January. Del Toro’s Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Mia Wasikowska (Stoker) are all still set to star in the film. Though no reason was given for Cumberbatch’s departure, del Toro certainly has time to find a replacement. Even Chastain was technically a sub, and only came on board when Emma Stone dropped out earlier this year. [THR]
• Maria Bello (Touch)is set to re-team with Kevin Costner for Disney’s McFarland, a sports drama based on the true story of a struggling California high school track team and their unlikely journey to the championship. Bello will play the part of the coach’s (Costner) wife. Niki Caro, who wrote are directed 2002’s Whale Rider, is set to direct. [The Wrap]
• Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) is set to star in Shelter, which her husband, actor Paul Bettany, is directing. The Hurt Locker’s Anthony Mackie will also star. So far, plot details are being kept secret. [Variety]
• Joel Johnstone, who plays Cameron on The Newsroom, has scored a role in Disney’s big screen take on the classic children’s book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, which stars Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner. [THR]
• Cowboys and Aliens actor Wyatt Russell will play Zook the college student in 22 Jump Street, which is scheduled to hit theaters on June 13, 2014. [Deadline]
• Natalie Martinez (Under the Dome) has joined the cast of Run All Night, where she’ll play the wife of Joel Kinnaman’s (The Killing) character. The pic also stars Liam Neeson and Ed Harris, and will be directed by Jaume Collet-Sera (Unknown). [Deadline]
