Tonight’s episode of Entertainment Weekly and Sundance Channel’s series The Writer’s Room sits down with New Girl creator Liz Meriwether, star Jake Johnson, and executive producers Brett Baer and Dave Finkel.

Talking about the first kiss between Nick (Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) in Jan. 29 episode, “Cooler,” Meriwether says, “We wanted it to be messy,” and Johnson himself admits that he was surprised the two characters’ showmance heated up as quickly as it did. But which of the loftmates was originally slated to kiss Jess at the end of a drunken night of True American? Find out in the video below!

And fear not, you small but passionate faction of anti-Nick-and-Jess Newbies! Finkel and Meriwether tease, “There are so many opportunities now for Nick to mess up.” Adds Finkel, dripping with sarcasm, “He’s going to turn his life around. That kid’s gonna make it!”

The Writers’ Room airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on the Sundance Channel. New Girl returns to Fox for its third season on Sept. 17 at 9 p.m. ET.
