'Big Brother' racism: Amanda and 'Shaniqua'
There was a challenge on last night’s Big Brother which involved throwing giant frogs onto giant lily pads in order to win prizes. These prizes included: Wearing a skintight clown costume (or “clownitard”) for a week; wearing a dog collar for 48 hours; or being forced to undergo a full-body spray-tan whenever special music played.
Any other year, this would be yet another surreal-cartoon afternoon in the Big Brother house. This year, though, the producers appear to have specifically cast contestants whose perspective on race relations hover precariously between “the fraternity with all the spoiled drunken lacrosse guys” and “Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained.”
Thus, midway through the challenge, a contestant named Amanda got in a loud verbal argument with a contestant named Candice. (If you’re a non-viewer, here’s what you have to know: Amanda is one of the most powerful people in the house and is going crazy with power, like we’re talking full Caligula here; Candice is one of the least powerful people in the house and is incapable of pretending that she doesn’t hate everyone.)
Their argument was built on a foundation of intra-house drama too complex to get into here, but suffice it to say that at a certain point, Amanda yelled at Candice:
“That’s the Shaniqua coming out of you, I guess!”
Lest you miss the implications of that reference, Amanda followed that up with:
“Am I racist now? I’m racist now.”
This calls for a poll!
The good news is, Amanda “won” the spray-tan prize. See results above.
