Awesome smart lady shout out!

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates what would have been the 195th birthday of the first female astronomer in the United States, Maria Mitchell. In 1847 she discovered a comet which as a result became known as “Miss Mitchell’s Comet.” The homepage doodle depicts Mitchell staring into a telescope as ‘Google’ is illuminated behind her amongst the stars.

In addition to her work in the sciences, she was also a Unitarian thinker, anti-slavery activist, and suffragette. Famously, she thought women’s minds were wasted when they spent their time at home rather than perusing intellectual activities.

She’d probably be a big fan of Google.
