• Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) is in early talks to star in Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie, a sci-fi film with social and political themes based on his short Tertra Vaal about a police force of robots. The British actor is a regular on The Newsroom and will be reprising his role as Neal in the second season of the HBO show, which starts up again on July 14. [THR]

It seems like David Oyelowo is in everything these days, but rarely does he get a starring role. In 2012 alone he appeared in Jack Reacher, Lincoln, The Paperboy, Middle of Nowhere, and Red Tails. He’s changing things up with a starring role in the independent feature Nightingale. Sadly no plot details are readily available, butElliott Lester (Love Is the Drug) will direct. Oyelowo can be seen next in The Butler and the Nina Simone biopic Nina. [Deadline]

• Remember the little semi-sadistic redheaded scout from Moonrise Kingdom? Well his name is Lucas Hedges, he’s the son of author, screenwriter, and director Peter Hedges (About a Boy, Dan in Real Life), and he’s just been cast as the son of Jeremy Renner and Rosemarie DeWitt in Kill the Messenger. His upcoming projects include Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem and Jason Reitman’s Labor Day. [The Wrap]

Cougar Town’s Josh Hopkins has joined the cast of Kelly and Cal, where he’ll play the part of Juliette Lewis’s husband. They’re both former punk rockers who’ve settled into suburban normalcy since the days of their rebellious youth. Jen McGowan is making her feature directing debut on the project. [The Wrap]
