Edie Brickell‘s been having a good year: In addition to releasing an album and currently touring with funnyman-slash-bluegrass dude Steve Martin, she’s got two new songs on the upcoming soundtrack for The Way Way Back, starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, and Sam Rockwell — one of which, called “For the Time Being,” you can hear exclusively here:

The movie’s Oscar-winning writer-director team of Nat Faxon and Jim Rash — whom you might know from their work in The Descendants, Community (Rash), and Ben and Kate (Faxon) — explain how, with the help from music supervisor Linda Cohen, they came up with the soundtrack:

“Choosing music for our movie was one of the facets of directing that we were most looking forward to. [But] when the time came to start making actual choices, our brains became completely overwhelmed. It’s akin to trying to make the perfect mix for your girlfriend or boyfriend; you realize just how many ‘awesome’ songs there are out there and how daunting it can be to find the perfect one. The one that matches the mood and tone, that doesn’t overpower the scene with its lyrics or strong beat, that doesn’t cost more than the movie’s total budget.”

“We started with the character of Trent [Carell] and his beach house. We knew that this guy probably had only 10 CDs on rotation and they probably had not been updated in 20 years. The ones that weren’t scratched were likely lodged in his 6-disc player, on repeat. Mr. Mister’s ‘Kyrie’ felt like it had to be one of them. As we moved out of the house, we wanted the music to feel a bit more contemporary. Ben Kweller, Army Navy, and Young Galaxy were singers/bands that helped establish more of a current mood, infused with youthful summer exuberance. They also served as a nice bridge to the introduction of the water park.”

“It was there that we wanted to feel the influence of its manager, the character of Owen. In our minds, Owen’s taste in music transcended genres. It seemed he would love the older classics by UFO, Robert Palmer, and INXS, as well as embrace the recent music of Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed, The Apache Relay, and Trampled By Turtles.”
