Wendy Davis' filibuster not covered on networks
Wendy Davis, a Democrat in the Texas state Senate, attempted to block a vote on SB 5 — a strict anti-abortion bill — with a 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor.
According to the Associated Press, initially Republican lawmakers declared the bill passed, but later admitted that they did not get it signed in time.
Deadline reports that no network aired the Davis footage, so users watched the stream live online via YouTube. CNN specifically drew criticism for their lack of coverage of the event. During the time Davis made her speech, the news network included a conversation between Dr. Drew Pinsky and Piers Morgan discussing the calorie count of a blueberry muffin.
Once news of the filibuster went viral, celebrities voiced their support for Davis on Twitter. See their tweets below.
