Katy Perry: Russell Brand asked for divorce via text
One he sent her on New Year’s Eve, no less! This sort of thing is why the “That Was Way Harsh, Tai” tag was created.
In a revealing cover interview for Vogue‘s July issue, the 28-year-old singer discusses her career and her relationship history — paying special attention to her brief marriage to comedian and cable news scourge Russell Brand. “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” Perry says of her ex, whom she met in the summer of 2009 and married in the fall of 2010.
“Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011,” she continues — one day after he formally filed for divorce. The couple’s split was finalized in July 2012.
So, what led Brand to end a grown-up relationship in the least mature way possible — by taking a leaf out of Joe Jonas’s book, circa 2008? Though Katy Perry: Part of Me implied that the couple’s conflicting opinions on whether to have children right away motivated the breakup, Perry has another hypothesis. “At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness,” she tells Vogue. “He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting.”
Maybe the singer will have better luck with on-again off-again beau John Mayer, a musician with a “tortured soul” whom Perry says she’s still “madly in love with,” even though they last split in March.
Evidently, she’s got a type: “He’s got a beautiful mind,” Perry says of Mayer. “Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.” Could sexual napalm have anything to do with it?
