The first trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire has hit the web, and it's full of what you'd expect from a prequel/sequel/side-quel to the 2006 swords-and-sandals flick 300. There's lots of CGI, lots of blood, and lots — and I mean lots — of slo-mo.

Slo-mo sweat dropping off Persians' faces. Slo-mo sharpening of swords. Slo-mo running through mud. Slo-mo yelling. Slo-mo shooting of arrows. Slo-mo slashing of axes. Slo-mo horses leaping through fire.

Check out the trailer below:

While the first 300 film mostly focused on the Spartans in the fictionalized depiction of the Battle of Thermopylae between the Greeks and the Persians, the new movie shifts attention to the Persians and takes place before, during, and after the events of 300. Rodrigo Santoro returns as King Xerxes of Persia, and Eva Green (Casino Royale) joins the franchise as Artemisia. Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) also reprises her role as Queen Gorgo of Sparta. Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote 300, was busy with a little movie called Man of Steel while 300: Rise of an Empire was being made, so he returned for the follow-up in a less involved capacity, as a producer. Noam Murro (Smart People) directed 300: Rise of an Empire.

300: Rise of an Empire was originally scheduled for a summer 2013 release but is now set to hit theaters on March 7, 2014.
