Jon Oliver talks 'Daily Show' and 'Community'
- TV Show
John Oliver thinks it would be “fantastic” if Community creator Dan Harmon returns to oversee the sitcom’s fifth season. On May 25, Harmon tweeted “Yes yes yes! I’m back I’m back I’m back. You can thank @joelmchale” in response to a fan requesting a “straight answer” as to his much rumored return. Oliver, who played recurring character Dr. Ian Duncan during Harmon’s original tenure at the show, said he hadn’t heard anything on the Community grapevine about the showrunner returning “but that would be fantastic.”
Oliver was talking to EW ahead of his three-month stint standing in for Jon Stewart as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show while Stewart is directing his first movie, the drama Rosewater. Although Oliver will start fronting the show this coming Monday, the British comedian said that he has not been honing his host persona in demo shows. “No, because we have to do actual shows,” said Oliver, who in addition to his regular onscreen role as “correspondent” is one of the show’s writers. “There’s no real time. There is enough time in the day for us to produce a show and not more than that. The first demo show is going to be the first show.”
Oliver also joked that his enthusiasm for Harmon’s likely return to Community was linked to the possibility of him wrecking The Daily Show during his tenure behind the desk: “Once I’ve tanked the safest show on television then, yes, I will absolutely be calling Dan to say, ‘Look, if you’re back, I’m back, let’s do this! I’ve nowhere else to go!’”
