When season 7 of Burn Notice picks up nine months after last season’s finale, Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) is deep undercover and far away from his friends back in Miami. When we chatted with Donovan about the premiere, we asked him if this was the darkest we’ve seen his character.
“Absolutely,” he responded. “One of the show’s conceit[s] was Michael had to compartmentalize his feelings to protect himself and survive, not only as a spy but as a child. The first time we’re seeing him this year we’re gonna pull that layer away and expose how he feels.”
Speaking of how he feels, last season’s dramatic final scene between Fiona and Michael left many fans worried. They’re not together when the show picks up, but Donovan teases that the season “pulls them together” over the next 13 episodes. However, he didn’t reveal if that meant as a couple or as friends.
Given that this is the show’s final season, we had to ask Donovan where he hoped Michael would end up. “That’s a difficult question to answer, because I think that Michael truly wants what’s best for the people he cares about not for himself. But I think that if Michael left this family of Sam, Mom, and Fi they would be unhappy. So he wants to be in their lives but he knows that him being in their lives tortures them. So it’s a difficult conflict.”
Burn Notice’s final season premieres tonight at 9 p.m. ET. Next week will be the show’s 100th episode which is also directed by Donovan. Watch a special promo for the season below:
