UPDATE: A rep for the song’s producer, Mike Will Made It, denies that the song is about ecstasy, telling TMZ that the lyric is actually “Dancin’ with MILEY.” (Even if it doesn’t sound like that.) The rep declined to talk about the “trying to get a line in the bathroom” lyric.
PREVIOUSLY: Hannah Montana has officially left the building.
Miley Cyrus’ new single “We Can’t Stop” her first solo release in nearly three years, subverted the expectations of listeners who thought the intermittently engaged ex-Disney superstar would deliver another “Party in the USA”-type anthem.
Instead, Cyrus unveiled a downtempo party jam, complete with a hypnotic beat courtesy of producer Mike Will Made It (seriously, that’s his name) and a heaping dose of her own Rihanna-lite rude-girl swagger.
The sound of the song was enough to make headlines, but it’s the not-so-thinly-veiled drug references that have sent the internet into a an Urban Dictionary–referencing frenzy:
In the second verse of the song (yes, the one that starts with the line, “To my home girls here with the big butts”), Cyrus implies cocaine usage:
Even “turnt up” isn’t just a banal term for having fun. According to the top result here, “turnt up” means “thee act of getting drunk and high to thee highest degree.” The second highest-rated definition reads, “A state of altered consciousness induced by alcohol or narcotics, also being happy and excited and energetic.”
But cocaine isn’t just a solo star here; in the pre-chorus, Cyrus brings in Ecstasy (or for you science majors out there, Methylenedioxymethamphetamine.)
“Molly” is a commonly used slang term for ecstasy: rapper Tyga has an entire song and appropriately trippy video dedicated to the stuff, and Madonna famously riled up Deadmau5 by referencing it at last year’s Ultra Music Festival. Considering Miley is now palling around with substance enthusiasts like Snoop Dogg Lion, maybe she felt it was high time (sorry) to get up in the mix? Or maybe it’s just her way of letting the world know, once again, that Miley Cyrus is All Grown Up. No seriously, you guys. ALL GROWN UP.
