ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." - Season Three

Does Joss Whedon ever sleep? One has to wonder with everything he has going on. Not only is he busy writing The Avengers 2, but he also has a new series (Marvel’s The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., coming this fall on ABC) and a new movie (a modern day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, opening in theaters June 7). We asked him about all three things and more when he stopped by to chat on Entertainment Weekly’s new SiriusXM channel 105, and in case you missed it there, you can listen in right here on the InsideTV Podcast.

Why spend his 12-day vacation after filming The Avengers shooting a Shakespeare movie in his own house? And what Shakespeare work would he like to tackle next? Whedon tells us all about his new film and the familiar faces that pop up in it. And then I grill him on Marvel’s The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. How is Agent Phil Coulson — who we clearly saw bite it at the hands of Loki in The Avengers — alive and kicking for the new series? Whedon promises all will be explained when the show premieres. “We’re gonna earn it,” he says of coming up with an explanation that will meet fans’ approval. “That’s not something you take lightly.”

I also try my darndest to get Whedon to reveal the identity of the J. August Richards character seen in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trailer. Is it that of vigilante Rage, as has been speculated online? “I’m not going to say who he’s playing,” teases Whedon. “But he’s certainly cranky, as you can tell from the trailer.” We also get updates on the future of a Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog sequel and some of the other projects Whedon would like to pursue, including…a ballet? But that’s not all! X-Files alum Gillian Anderson calls in to talk about her new show streaming on Netflix, The Fall. Anderson plays a detective trying to catch a serial killer, but her character won’t let that get in the way of her sex life! Anderson chats all about the role as well as her eclectic career and life post-X-Files. She also reveals the one show she couldn’t help but binge-watch.

And finally, we’re breaking news in the world of reality TV! Survivor host Jeff Probst drops a bombshell as he unexpectedly reveals the twist for the next Blood vs. Water season. “I think it’s okay to say that it is going to be family members,” says Probst of the next season’s cast. “And they’ll end up playing against each other.” Whose family members? you may ask. Well, CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler tells EW that Survivor: Blood vs. Water will indeed feature “the return of great characters and their relatives.” So there you have it: The cast will be a mix of returning players and their loved ones.
