Keith Urban: 'There is talk' about possible return to 'American Idol'
Keith Urban has already said he would be willing to return to American Idol as a judge, but for the time being, his future on the show remains up in the air, the singer said Thursday backstage at the American Idol finale.
“I have no idea. All I know is that there is talk about it,” he says. “For me, I’m in the studio literally this week finishing up my album and putting a tour together, hitting the road in July. So onwards.”
Just yesterday, Urban told reporters that he would be open to returning as a judge next season, which, as of now, will likely be a panel of mostly — if not completely — new judges. Longtime judge Randy Jackson announced his departure from the show last week, after spending a whopping 12 seasons at the judges table. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, who spent the season engaged in a very public feud, will both reportedly not be returning.
Minaj did not comment on her status on the show during a brief chat with reporters following the finale that crowned 23-year-old Candice Glover the season 12 champion. And Carey, who producers reportedly nearly fired earlier this season, skipped the press room.
Idol producers have yet to announce who will be filling Jackson’s spot next year, and Urban admitted he, too, was at a loss for ideas. “Randy is irreplaceable. He’s an original. I have no idea. As they always say, more should be revealed.”
